While studying with BAES Shaunette has experienced very difficult living conditions and personal issues which would have overwhelmed many people.

However, throughout all this turmoil she has shown great resilence and amazing determination to continue to attend her sewing classes at Sparkhill Centre.

Shaunette joined the Sewing for Beginners course because she wanted to learn how to use a sewing machine and follow patterns to make clothes and accessories for herself, friends and family. So far, she has learned how to use a sewing machine safely and constructed many garments including PJ bottoms, dressing gown, a summer top and an A-line skirt using a commercial pattern.

Almost as importantly though, she has made new friends and developed a network of people with a shared interest. The course environment and group has helped to maintain Shaunette’s mental health and the classes have provided a safe and normal space for her to be in at least once a week. Her tutor says,

“Despite all the hardships, family responsibilities and difficulties Shaunette has experienced she has remained a positive, helpful and friendly member of our community group and an enthusiastic and dedicated student.”

Shaunette should be so proud of her achievements and we look forward to seeing what she makes next.
