Bernadette is a busy grandmother with 17 grandchildren ranging in ages from 2 to 24 years.
Her goal is to be better in her use of maths and English as she would love to be able to help her grandchildren with their schoolwork.
In her own school days Bernadette felt overlooked and undervalued. This experience has really dented her self-confidence to the point that she really struggles to overcome negative self-belief and it is an ongoing battle for her to come into the centre. Attending every session is nerve-wracking for Bernadette.
However, she has battled to overcome her anxiety and has this year been rewarded by gaining a high pass mark at Entry 3 maths. She has already progressed onto a new course to prepare for Maths Functional Skills - Level 1.
Now she is beginning to build her self-confidence she has started to broaden her horizons. Recently she has started to talk about joining an English class to improve her confidence in reading and writing.
Her tutor says,
“Bernadette would like to be able to pick up a book and read it without struggling. Every Christmas she is given the new David Walliams book but cannot read it. She is determined that one day soon she will be able to relax and read it for pleasure.”
With her resilience and determination to succeed we have no doubt Bernadette will be reading to her grandchildren very soon.
