Odette is a single mother with three boys to raise.

She joined her first course with BAES when she joined a Family Learning course at Sladefield Infant School. Several courses later and having regained some of her confidence she talked to her tutor about what she could do next.

She was put in touch with our Careers and Courses team to discuss her options. Having talked about her skills, qualifications and family commitments, she decided to join a Pre-Employment Training course. At that time BAES was running a course with Mencap who wanted to recruit more Support Workers.

During the course our Employment Officer supported Odette and was on hand to make sure she filled in her application form and went through with the guaranteed job interview at the end of the course. Odette had a successful interview and was offered a job as a domestic support officer working with a client in her local community. Odette says,

“I love my job – in care work you aren’t doing it for the money, you need to have the passion. I have that passion and I want to help the people I work with feel respected and have their dignity.”

Odette is currently very happy balancing her family commitments with the flexible hours her job offers. In the future who knows? Odette would at some point in the future like to explore opportunities to progress with Mencap and says if she can overcome her fear of needles she would love to become a nurse!
