Internet Safety

Course aims

To help you access and use the internet safely. To give you an awareness of potentially unsafe practices for younger internet users.

Course length

5 hours – usually 2 weekly sessions of 2.5 hours.

Who is this course for?

Anyone who uses the internet on their computer, tablet or smart phone.

Will I gain any qualifications?

No, but you will receive a BAES certificate of attendance.

Do I need any prior knowledge, skills or qualifications?

No qualifications are required but you must be able to use a computer and use the internet.

Course content

The course will provide you with the following useful information:

  • Understand the risks that exist when using the internet
  • Know how to safeguard yourself and others when working online
  • Be able to take precautions to maintain data security
  • Have an understanding of legal constraints, guidelines and procedures when working online.

What could this course lead to?

You could consider further IT qualification depending on your skill level, such as Computers - Second Step, level 1 or 2 ITQ/ECDL. You could take a qualification course in Internet Safety at level 1 such as ASCENTIS Internet Safety Level 1 Award.

How will I learn?

The tutor will give demonstrations and facilitate group discussions. You will also use computers and the internet during the sessions to improve your skills and understanding.

Your commitment as a learner

You must attend both of the sessions. You may like to bring your own tablets or smartphone to use during the session although computers will be provided. Please bring a pen and paper to take notes.
