Introduction to Mental Health

Course aims

This qualification will help you to increase your awareness and understanding of mental health issues. It will introduce key areas surrounding mental health, provide insight into the challenges faced by people with mental health issues and develop the skills required to progress into employment in the sector.

What could these courses lead to?

This course could be a helpful introduction to mental health when working in schools or health care settings, especially in the COVID-19 situation. The UK government has launched a new campaign called ‘care for others’ to encourage those that want to support others to make a difference within Health and Social Care. Progression could include accredited further education courses and could lead to work as a mental health support worker, Counsellor, Psychologist, Psychiatrist, Social Worker or Nurse.

In 2019-2020, the average salary for mental health support work is £18,105 per year

In 2019-2020, the average salary for mental health nurse is £41,570 per year

In 2019-2020, the average salary for a counsellor is £28,416 per year

Course length

20 hours – usually 10 weekly sessions of 2 hours

Who is this course for?

This course is for those who would like to develop their own understanding of mental health.

Entry requirements

You must have English skills at level 1 or above.

Course content

You will learn about:

  • The issues surrounding mental health
  • The rights of people with mental health issues
  • An insight into various stereotypes and misconceptions of those suffering from their mental health
  • Safeguarding those with mental illness
  • Support services and treatments for those with mental illness

Will I gain any qualifications?

You will complete a workbook with the support of the tutor and achieve a BAES certificate.

Where can this qualification lead?

Once completed, you may wish to progress to accredited certificates in:

  • Mental health level 2
  • Children’s and young people mental health Level 2
  • Counselling Level 2

This will be subject to initial assessments and discussions between you and your tutor.
