Learning new skills should not be something we have just one opportunity to achieve during our schooldays.

At Birmingham Adult Education Service (BAES) we believe that learning is a lifelong journey - it is never too late to learn something new. When the time is right for you to develop new skills to achieve your personal goals or pursue a new career we are here to help.

The last few years have given us all the time to reflect and re-evaluate goals and aspirations for ourselves and our families. Many of us now have a desire to do things differently in both our work and everyday lives. Joining an adult education course will help empower you to make these changes happen.

Our new curriculum offer for this academic year provides choices for everyone, with innovative courses to help those from all communities get back into education and achieve their goals. There is plenty for you to choose from and we hope our courses will inspire you to build a brighter future.

Maths - Working towards GCSE

Course Description

This course aims to empower learners, by building on existing mathematical knowledge, increasing their understanding, confidence and skill set to use mathematics in their future careers.  

This course will cover the Grades 1-3 content of Foundation GCSE mathematics. The main areas of the study are: number, ratio and proportion, algebra, geometry and measure, statistics and probability. 

Working towards GCSE courses will be delivered either on site or online. For online classes, you must have easy access to a computer with the internet. Classes will be held twice a week and each session will be 2.5 hours long.

This course includes a 3-week BAES IT Fundamentals course in order to maximise participation in learning using digital tools.

Support if you are registered unemployed, looking for a job or a better job - Route to Work 

As part of your programme of learning, we will support you to develop the skills you need to get a job or a better job, such as CV writing, application forms, interviews and working in a team. Your tutor will discuss individual learning and development needs to agree with you which of our Route to Work short courses will best suit your needs and enrol you on these modules. 

Entry Requirement

It is necessary that learners have good literacy (at least Level 1) and numeracy skills before starting the course. In order to be considered suitable for this course, learners should at least have achieved Level 1 Maths Functional Skills or have equivalent skills.

Initial Assessment

To gain a place on the course, all learners must book an initial assessment by calling BAES info Line on 0121 303 4318 or one of the BAES centres. GCSE initial assessments are generally carried out remotely on Zoom, although people can book a face-to-face assessment.

Learning Strategies

It is important that learners attend all sessions and make time to work at home every week in order to prepare, practise and consolidate their learning. The Service has on-line subscription to MathsWatch and MyMaths and learners can access videos, quizzes and other activities on our BAES Moodle site.

Progress Monitoring

Learners’ progress and attendance will be monitored throughout the course. After the first progress check in October, the learner and their teacher will determine whether it is appropriate for the learner to continue with the course. Aspects included in the discussion are attendance, punctuality, ability to cope with the amount of work required and performance on progress checks.


There will be no formal exams, but a portfolio of work that learners have completed during the course will be submitted at the end of the course in December. 


Working Towards GCSE will progress to GCSE Foundation course in January. Learners will take thier GCSE Maths exam in summer 2022.
