Websites, Apps & Programming - Level 1

Course aims

To develop skills in image drawing/manipulation, introduction to coding, programming and basic website development.

Course length

40 hours – usually 20 weekly sessions of 2 hours.

Who is this course for?

Those with some IT skills and a keen interest in the more logical programming and games design side of IT. Those wishing to progress into jobs in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) industries and in the digital skills sector.

Will I gain any qualifications?

No this is a course to develop your skills further. There is no qualification awarded, but you will receive a certificate from Birmingham Adult Education Service.

Do I need any prior knowledge, skills or qualifications?

This course is not suitable for complete beginners. You do not need any previous IT qualifications but you will need a logical mind and a very keen interest in simple computer games/puzzles and computer coding in general. You will need knowledge of using a QWERTY keyboard. You must also have English and Maths skills at Level 1 or above.

Course content

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Understand principles of graphic animation, decision making in the development and editing of computer games using Scratch, Javascript and Python
  • Use imaging software such as Gimp to edit and manipulate images such as touching up photos and creating high quality graphics
  • Create and edit web pages using pictures and links
  • Upload web pages to the Internet.

What could this course lead to?

Websites Apps & Programming - Level 2. This course could support your future employment in technical fields such as programming, project management, creative digital arts and working for such employers as HS2. It will also support you to design your own website.

How will I learn?

In a dedicated IT classroom environment using written course materials and online learning resources. There will be group discussions, tutor-led demonstrations, tutorials, work in small groups, individual and peer (working with other learners) teaching. You may also be asked to do homework to expand your skills.

What materials or equipment will I need to provide?

You will need a pen, notepad, and a folder to store hand-outs and completed exercises. You will also need to supply a memory stick. Ideally, you will have access to a computer or any other IT device outside the classroom and you will need to have an email account. Having access to online storage is advisable.

Your commitment as a learner

To achieve success on the course you will need to attend regularly. If you need to miss a class, please let us know in advance.

You will need to ensure that you allow sufficient time for self-study and complete any homework set. You will be expected to complete all assessments and complete the full course.
