Head of Service
Ilgun Yusuf, Principal
Why did you join BAES?
Because of the opportunity to work with the most talented, dedicated and supportive staff team in delivering something special each day for every learner and community in Birmingham.
Tell us about your day - hours you work, who are your direct reports
The members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) report directly to the Principal. The full business of BAES is represented – Heads of Faculty, Quality/Learner Services, and finance/resources, including HR and staff development. The SLT meets formally once a week, rotating between each of our centres.
My typical working day is varied and fascinating. It involves lots of listening to staff across the full range of job roles (business operations and curriculum) about what is working well and what can we do even better for colleagues, learners and our partners.
How has BAES supported your career development?
BAES is uniquely positioned as the local authority provider of adult education for Birmingham to work closely with Council teams and partners across the lifelong learning journey – these operational networks and strategically aligned priorities enable me, my teams and learners to reap the full range of career opportunities in serving the needs of citizens, communities and businesses.
What values in the workplace are important to you?
It is my moral and professional purpose to use the power of learning to unlock the potential of learners, citizens and businesses to tackle the causes of inequality, create prosperity, promote healthy lives, facilitate active citizenship and build stronger communities.
What's the best thing about working at BAES in Birmingham City Council?
Working with committed, high-performing colleagues who are super role-models, with a shared vision and values, but also having a good sense of humour along with a healthy attitude to work-life balance.
