Hanisa is new to BAES but made an impression on her community learning tutor instantly.

Motivated by a strong desire to support her autistic daughter with her education, Hanisa enrolled on a Becoming a Parent Ambassador course.

Doing this wasn’t a walk in the park for Hanisa. For years she’d battled with depression and anxiety and had reached the point where she’d cut herself off from others in order to cope.
Her daughter’s autism diagnosis, however, was a turning point for Hanisa. She used this discovery as a kind of re-awakening. She decided she wanted to make a positive impact on her daughter’s education, the school itself and to become more involved in the local community. By joining the Parent Ambassador course, she allowed this to happen.

Reflecting on this learner, her tutor says:

“Hanisa is the strongest learner in the group. She is very intelligent and has a hunger for learning. She has steadily developed her confidence and self-esteem and has also learned to share problems in her family life with others in the group.”

If asked about how she’s developed on the course, Hanisa would cite her improved literacy and numeracy skills, better approach to studying and time-management, the ability now to socialise and build relationships more easily, amongst other personal developments.

She has gone onto become an active part of the school community by joining the PTA and using her own life experiences to support other parents. She plans to build a career in social work, counselling or teaching in the future.
