This course will enable you to use sugar modelling tools, equipment and techniques to create realistic looking sugar flowers

Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone who wants to develop basic levels of skill in sculpting sugar flowers.

Entry requirements

You will not need experience of sugar modelling as this course is for beginners. As the course involves taking notes and measurements you will need to have basic levels of English and maths. You will have a short initial assessment at the start of the course to ensure that it is suitable for you.

What will I learn?

  • How to use tools and equipment safely and correctly
  • How to prepare sugar paste so that it is strong enough for modelling
  • How to add colour to sugar paste to create natural looking effects
  • How to make the basic shapes of petals, leaves and stamens
  • How to use modelling tools and templates to create details
  • An awareness of employment opportunities in the confectionary industry

How will I learn?

  • Through tutor demonstration and instruction
  • By exploring materials, equipment, tools and techniques
  • By producing a range of experimental flowers
  • By producing a small portfolio containing samples, information on techniques you have learned, and photographs of work that you have made

What could this course lead to?

It could lead to further courses in sugar craft or cake decorating techniques at Intermediate or Advanced Level.

Your responsibilities as a learner on this course

To ensure that you gain maximum benefit from your course you will need to attend all sessions, be punctual, and bring the correct materials to each session.

Important information

Fees for this course do not include the cost of materials. You will need to purchase sugar paste, modelling tools, a sugar craft rolling pin and board, shape cutters, colouring and accessories. Your tutor will advise you about costs and suppliers during the first session.

For the first week, you will only need to bring an apron, pencil and paper.
