Course details
Pathway to Floristry - Entry 3 Award (NCFE)
Length of course: 20 hours
Who is this course for?
This course is for those who wish to develop a basic level of skill and knowledge in floristry and/or who may wish to go on to study floristry at a higher level.
Entry requirements
This is a beginners course so you do not need any previous experience of floristry.
As the course involves keeping notes and taking measurements you will need to have basic levels of English and maths. There will be a short initial assessment at the start of the course to ensure that the course is suitable.
You will learn how to
- Use basic materials, tools and equipment.
- Make bows.
- Package and gift wrap finished items.
- Use primary and secondary colours in your displays.
- Use and store plant material, tools and equipment safely.
- You will learn about employment opportunities in the Floristry sector.
- Develop job opportunities in Floristry.
- Develop English, Maths and ICT skills.
Pathway to Floristry - Level 1 Award (NCFE)
Length of course: 60 Hours
Who is this course for?
This course is for those who wish to develop a basic level of skill. It would be a suitable starting point if you are thinking about looking for work or self-employment in this creative industry.
Entry requirements
This is an introduction course so you do not need any formal experience of floristry. An enthusiasm for flowers and personal experience of arranging floral displays would be desirable.
This course involves keeping notes and taking measurements so you will need to have basic levels of English and maths. There will be a short initial assessment at the start of the course to ensure that the course is suitable for you.
You will learn how to
- To use a range of materials, tools and equipment to produce different design arrangements
- To package and gift wrap finished items
- To use primary and secondary colours and how to combine them for effect
- To collect and develop ideas from a variety of sources
- To discuss and record ideas and adapt according to feedback & circumstances
- To produce a range of designs and arrangements based on planning and research to set assignments
- To produce finished work demonstrating a basic level of skill
- To present finished designs to good effect and carry out verbal and written evaluation of finished material
- Use appropriate plant material in line with Health & Safety regulations
- Use and store tools and equipment safely in line with Health & Safety regulations
- Be aware of employment opportunities in the floristry industry
- To produce portfolio of evidence, showing skills, development, research
and finished work
Level 2 Certificate (NCFE)
Length of course: 60 Hours
Who is this course for?
This course is for those who wish to continue to develop their level of skill and knowledge in floristry and/or who may wish to go on to study floristry at a higher level.
You may have some knowledge and basic skills in the floristry industry - probably from a role where you work under supervision. You want to increase your floristry skills and take on more responsibility.
Entry requirements
You should already have some experience of creating floral displays, a floristry qualification at level 1 is desirable but not essential. At the start of this course, your tutor will carry out an initial assessment to check that the level is suitable for you.
This course involves keeping notes and taking measurements so you will need to have basic levels of English and maths. There will be a short initial assessment at the start of the course to ensure that the course is suitable for you.
You will learn how to
- Use materials, tools and equipment to produce different design arrangements
- Be able to package and gift wrap finished items to a good standard
- Know how to use primary and secondary colours and combine them for effect
- Have collected and developed ideas from a variety of sources
- Be able to discuss and record ideas and adapt according to feedback & circumstances
- Have produced a wide range of designs and arrangements based on planning and research to set assignments
- Have produced finished work demonstrating a good level of skill
- Be able to present finished designs to good effect and carry out verbal and written evaluation of finished material
- Be able to identify different types of business
- Be able to apply your understanding of business enterprise
- Know how to use and store plant material and tools safely and in line with health & safety regulations
- Have produced a portfolio of evidence, showing skills, development, research
and finished work.
Level 3
Length of course: 75 Hours
Who is this course for?
The course is suitable for florist who wish to develop existing skills and knowledge to achieve a high level of competence and gain a nationally recognised qualification.
You may have recently gained a level 2 qualification or have worked in floristry for some time - you have plenty of experience. You want to develop your skills further, perhaps to move into a management role.
Entry requirements
A floristry qualification at level 2 is desirable. At the start of this course, your tutor will carry out an initial assessment to check that the level is suitable for you.
This course involves keeping notes and taking measurements so you will need to have basic levels of English and maths. There will be a short initial assessment at the start of the course to ensure that the course is suitable for you.
You will learn how to
- Use a range of resources and judgements in response to set commissions
- Evaluate the properties and usefulness of a range of materials and equipment
- Produce a wide range of experimental and sample pieces
- Confidently negotiate with potential clients from a position of knowledge
- Research and record creative ideas and designs
- Be able to critically evaluate own work and that of others
- Have experience of carrying out a fully costed commercial project in response to an external commission
- Be able to plan and prepare finished compositions to an advanced level
- Understand the standards and requirements of the floristry industry
- Be able to use equipment and plant material correctly and in line with health and safety regulations
- Produced a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates an advanced level of competence and presentation skills.
How will I learn?
- Your tutor will demonstrate techniques which you will practice and experiment with.
- You will produce sample pieces in a variety of techniques.
- You will carry out research for the techniques used.
- You will produce a portfolio showing your samples and achievements.
What could this course lead to?
These courses will help you to develop your floristry skills from basic levels of design and practical skills through to becoming a skilled practitioner ready to work in the Floristry Industry. After taking these qualifications, you could go on to take a Level 4 Higher Diploma in Floristry or a Level 5 Master Diploma in Professional Floristry. Alternatively, you could go on to take the Level 4 NVQ in Floristry Business Management.
Your responsibilities as a learner on this course
So that you have the best chance of successfully passing this qualification, you will need to attend all sessions, be punctual, complete homework as required, and bring the correct tools and resources to each session.
Other Important Information
In addition to the course fees, flowers and foliage will cost between £3 and £10 per session, depending on the quantity and quality of goods purchased. Fresh flowers will not be required every week.
For the first session you will only need to bring a pen and writing pad. Materials needed for the first session will be provided by your tutor. You will need to purchase a pair of floristry scissors (cost approx. £7) and a floristry knife (cost approx. £7.50) within the first 2 weeks of the course starting the course.
