Charity Event - Acacia Family Support
Our ESOL Entry 2 learners at Sparkhill Centre decided to arrange a charity event for Acacia Family Support who are based in Sutton Coldfield. They chose this charity because it fitted in well with mental health awareness week and was also a good way to raise awareness of Postnatal & Prenatal depression. This type of depression is either a taboo subject or not often recognised in some communities, meaning people suffer in silence.
Acacia sent one of their staff Puja who has been working with the charity for the last three years to deliver a talk on how the charity came about, how it got its name and what issues it focuses on.

Our learners took the time out of their daily lives to make some lovely food to sell in order to raise money for the charity. The learners really enjoyed the day and were really pleased to have raised over £380 for the charity. Well done to our learners on having achieved such a brilliant amount for such a good cause.

Saima & Sajida now know about postnatal and prenatal depression.
Ibraheem said Acacia has encouraged him to get involved in voluntary work and he asked them how he could get into the voluntary work.
Mental Health Awareness
Rawnak explained that she used to do a lot of charity work in Italy. She felt good helping other people and this was her first opportunity in the UK.
Sumaira learnt how to invite people via email.
Aroosa said the morning helped improve her self-confidence.

Sadaf learnt how to design a poster to advertise the event.
Ibraheem felt he gained further skills in working together as a team.
Marwa & Naeema said they gained self-confidence and organisation skills as a result of the event.
