ESOL - Level 2
Who is this course for?
Adults (19+) who speak another language and want to improve their English to live and work in the UK. The course is free for learners on certain benefits.
Course aims
- To improve your reading, writing, speaking and listening in English to help you in your everyday life and work.
- To improve your IT skills for basic communication and learning.
- To help you understand Prevent, Safeguarding, e-safety and British Values.
What qualifications do I need?
No qualifications are needed. You will be assessed and placed into a class suitable for your level.
Course structure
The course is made up of 3 parts, Speaking & Listening, Reading and Writing.
What will I learn?
At the end of this course, you should be able to:
- present information, explanations, instructions, accounts, descriptions and ideas in a structured manner giving general and specific points with examples
- listen to, understand and follow multi-step verbal instructions correctly for a given purpose
- use a wide variety of verb tenses to describe past, present and future events, including continuous and perfect forms, and reported speech
- use the passive voice and a wide range of modal verbs to express possibility, certainty and obligation
- use knowledge of different forms of sentence and clause structure i.e. passive and conditional constructions, inverted, embedded and non-finite clauses, to work out meaning
- when writing be able to present information and ideas in a logical sequence using paragraphs and a range of connectives and discourse markers e.g. in spite of the fact that, nevertheless, subsequently, accordingly, etc
- use personal and relative pronouns to replace/refer to nouns to avoid repetition and improve clarity
- use suitable vocabulary for genre, purpose, audience and content, including stylistic devices to achieve purpose e.g. similes, metaphors
How will I learn?
- Attend for 3 sessions per week. Each session is 2.5 hours. You are expected to attend all 3 sessions every week.
- You will agree personal goals with your teacher.
- Work in groups, pairs and individually.
- Regularly complete paper-based and online homework activities.
- Regular 1:1 meetings with your teacher to talk about your progress (tutorials).
Will I gain any qualification?
You will complete exams in Level 2 Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing.

This course could lead to an English GCSE course and also help you to find a job.
