Tai Chi - Beginners & Improvers

Course aims

  • To enable learners to experience movements of Tai Chi in a safe and relaxed environment.
  • To develop body awareness.
  • To introduce learners to main principles and philosophy of Tai Chi including stances, breathing techniques and relaxation.
  • To develop and extend learners’ knowledge and understanding of main principles and philosophy of Tai Chi.
  • To develop and extend an understanding of Chinese culture and its relationship to Tai Chi.

Learning outcomes

  • Recognise names of Tai Chi forms and stances.
  • Become more aware of own body e.g. balance, breathing, body alignment.
  • Identify tension in the body.
  • Define the underpinning principles of Tai Chi.
  • Practise basic or more advanced Tai Chi movements, forms and stances, depending on ability.
  • Develop a more relaxed attitude, reflect on life in a positive manner with the use of Tai Chi.

Who is the course for?

Learners new to Tai Chi who wish to gently increase their body awareness and practice simple Tai Chi stances and forms, or those who wish to develop existing skills further.

Do I need any knowledge, skills or qualifications?

No, this course is open to beginners as well as those with more experience.

Will I gain any qualifications?

No.

How will I learn?

Demonstration, verbal instruction, practical sessions during the class, group discussion, handouts and visual aids, reflection, partner practice.

What could this course lead to?

The next level of Tai Chi course; other styles and aspects of Tai Chi, physical fitness or wellbeing courses.

What materials or equipment will I need to provide?

You should wear loose, comfortable clothing. You will need to wear flat comfortable footwear but please ask the tutor what is suitable on enrolment.

Other information

Learners will be required to complete a Health Questionnaire before beginning the course, to ensure it is appropriate for them.
