Content: This course aims to give parents of young children awareness of how to extend and support children’s communication and language development.
Learners will
- explore the role you play in developing your child’s speaking and listening skills.

Learning through play
Duration: This course is 6 weeks long.
Content: This course aims to raise awareness of how play is used to promote children’s learning and development.
Learners will explore
- STEM learning
- working without instructions
- creating story sacks
- supporting their child in developing creative skills
Is my child school-ready?
Duration: 6 weeks long course or 2 hour workshops
Content: This course aims to explore life skills children need to have developed when transitioning from home/nursery to primary school or primary to secondary school.
Learners will find out about -
- strategies to support their child’s emotional wellbeing
- techniques that develop self-help skills, encourage independence and build positive routines
- how to support their child with numbers, reading and writing
- how to stay safe online and safety tips when using social media
- how to develop healthy relationships
Empowering children - Parts 1 & 2
Duration: Each part course is 6 weeks long.
Content: This course gives learners opportunities to have one to one time with their child whilst developing emotional and social skills.
The course enhances parenting skills and gives space to discuss strategies and approaches that can lead to happier parenting.
Learners will -
- learn a range of techniques to strengthen the relationship between parent and child.
- improve their ability to support their child’s behaviour, social and life skills.
- improve communication between parent and child.
- explore children’s development and needs.
- explore legislation around Child Protection and Safeguarding
Storytelling
Duration: This course is 6 weeks long.
Content: This course aims to help parents and children in their journey of improving English skills and exploring the importance of children’s stories.
Learners will -
- improve motivation and ability to read to their children
- explore different storytelling techniques.
- develop an understanding of the importance of reading and exploring stories together
- improve English verbal skills and confidence
Phonics play - Part 1 & 2
Duration: 6 weeks long or 2 hour workshop
Content: These courses aim to explore the phonics learning-to-read method by guiding parents to support their children to link sounds to letters to enable them to read words and sentences.
Learners will explore -
- practical techniques to build confidence in reading skills
- key terminology
- blending sounds by modelling
- decoding and encoding clusters, digraphs and trigraphs
- spelling rules, tricky words and high frequency words
Introduction to childcare
Duration: 6 weeks or 2 hour workshop
Content: Introduction to Childcare aims to support learners to make an informed decision whether they want to work in a childcare setting.
Learner will find out how to:
- identify health and safety requirements within a childcare setting
- recognise activities that will support children’s development
- understand the importance of being professional when working with children
Homework havens
Duration: 2 hour workshops.
Content: This workshop offers a supportive and inclusive environment where children and parents/carers can come together to work on different activities to improve essential skills and/or complete children’s homework.
Learners will find out about -
- strategies to support your child with learning
- to support children to be more independent and confident in their learning
- how to support their child with maths and English
Build it together
Duration: 6 weeks long course or 2 hour workshops.
Content: This course aims to explore and improve skills children and parents use when building something together.
Learners will find out about -
- strategies to work in a team
- techniques that develop self-help skills, encourage independence and improve creative thinking
- how to support their child with numbers, reading and writing
- how to develop ideas for activities that will build bonds between family members
Course requirements
Learners will need access to a tablet/laptop/smartphone or PC. They will also need an email address and access to the internet.
What could these courses lead to?
On completion of these courses all learners will receive a certificate of achievement and it could lead to further accredited qualifications from Entry 3 to Level 3 Childcare and Supported Teaching and Learning courses.
At the end of the course, we will provide information about other learning opportunities and courses for adults to join in the local area.
